How long a Basketball Game is Everything You Should Know!

There are different playtimes for different levels of basketball games. The duration of the basketball game depends upon the level of the game and competition like there are different playtimes for professional, NBA, NCCA, high school, and college levels. All of these levels use over time if any game ends up with no result. Usually, overtime is 5 minutes long, but additional overtimes can be added once one of the teams is ahead over another. When does the clock start to run?

The clock will always run when the ball is in play until the following things are going to happen.

  • If  foul is called 
  • When the ball gets out of the pitch 
  • When there will be free throws and 
  • During the timeout 

When the ball is inbound, and a player from any of the teams touches the ball, then the clock starts running. If a shot makes during the last two minutes of the NBA game, then the clock stops, and overtime will begin. The shot clock

To prevent the teams from delaying and to speed up the game, then the shot clock is going to use or add. To be more precise shot clock means how much time one player has to shoot out the ball. If the ball hits the basket rim or a ball possession changes, the clock will start over. The duration of the shot clock varies upon the different levels of the basketball game.

  • 35 seconds for NCAA college men 
  • 24 seconds for NBA 
  • 30 seconds for NCAA college women

Time outs

Time outs have used to give the players some time to have rest. And any team can call for a time out if they need a break. There are different rules of time outs, and it also varies depending on the different levels of basketball games. Check out the below

  • High school – The player or the coach can call for a time out. A game consists of a total of five-time outs, including three 60 second time outs and two 30 seconds out. 

  • NBA –   In NBA, each of the basketball teams will get six full-time outs, including one 20 seconds out for every half. In NBA, the only player from any team can call for a time out. 

  • NCAA – There are different types of time outs in NCAA depending on the game will telecast on TV or not. If the game is on TV, there are media time outs so that the TV channel can show their ads. If the game broadcasts on TV, then both of the teams gets single one minute time out four 30 seconds time out. On the other side, if the game is not on TV, then there are four 75 seconds time outs and two 30 second time outs.

A professional NBA game consists of four quarters, and each quarter has 12 minutes each. So that means every game will last for 48 minutes without any overtime. But the game may take much longer depending on the stoppages like – injuries, fouls, timeouts, and break in-between. Usually, a typical match requires around 2 to 3 hours from the beginning to the end.

How long should you play a college basketball game?

Typically, college basketball game plays for 40 minutes. In the case of the college level, there are two halves dissimilar to the four quarters in a typical basketball game. Each of the halves in college basketball lasts for 20 minutes with a 15 minutes half time. Overtime period is for 5 minutes, and more time will add if any of the team gets ahead of the other. How many quarters are in basketball?

How many periods are there in basketball?

A basketball game comprises of four 10 minute quarters each, and there is a break for 15 minutes in the half time. There is a two-minute interval between the first and second periods and also another two-minute interval between the third and fourth periods.

In the case of fouls, each side is allowed to make three fouls before the opponent team gets a bonus compared to five fouls permitted for every quarter. There are 2 minutes and 10 seconds of a total break between the second and third and between the fourth and fourth quarters.
