10 Common Golf Injuries And Treatment

Golf is a type of game where you need lots of perseverance and hands-on skills. If you are a golf player, you need to give a lot of time to excel in it. Every golf player faces the body stress issue because of the nature of swing, leading to golf injuries. It expected that golf players suffer from different types of troublesome damages several times or at least once. Even those who play golf for the recreational purpose also experience such kinds of injuries. So if you are a golfer, you need to know different golf injuries and prevent them.

1. Elbow Injuries

An eruption and Pain on the inside of the upper arm, close to the elbow, is called elbow injury. Many golfers suffer from Tennis elbow. While doing a backswing, you may suddenly feel the Pain.

Prevention

The treatment of elbow and tennis elbow injuries may vary from person to person. Some possible treatments can be – medications, surgery, rest, therapy, counterforce bracing, cortisone, etc. you should avoid during such injuries: Do not decelerate the club before impact. For a few days don't expand your hands impulsively at the top of the backswing.

2. Back Pain

No matter a golfer is a professional or semiprofessional, back pain is a widespread type of injuries. Both professional and amateur level players suffer from back pain. The leading causes of back pain are the yearlong practice of swing. Sometimes you require giving pressure on the swing, and even you master on it. Back pain can occur due to some other issues, like – muscle pain, arthritis, stress fracture, disk-related problems, mechanical problems, etc.

Prevention

A golfer needs to train themselves on a perfect swing. They also have to know proper stretching practice and back mechanics as well. When you have back pain, you need to avoid placing your feet too far apart.

3. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

It is a kind of stress disorder that can happen in the nerves of the hands frequently. Wrist area pain, clumsiness, and weakness of the side, tingling, and numbness of the fingers are symptoms of this disorder.

Prevention

The comprehensive treatment can be – taking enough rest, medication, and splinting. If it is worse case, many need surgery. Since high pressure increases the wrist problems and makes the swing less accurate, you need to avoid giving high demand on the club grip.

4. Shoulder Injuries

Acromioclavicular joint arthritis, impingement, rotator cuff tendonitis, scapular lag, instability, etc. are the causes behind the shoulder pain. Night pain and upper arm Pain at the different golf swing points are the symptoms of this problem.

Prevention 

Medication, therapy, rest, a cortisone injection can be the treatment of this problem. And surgery may need depending on the severity and level of Pain. Before playing golf, you need to stretch your shoulder joints. By doing regular exercise, you can make your scapular muscle flexible to prevent the injury. While you suffer from shoulder pain, don't practice backswing with high speed, or else the shoulder's stress will increase.

5. Knee Injuries

Knee pain is one of the typical golf injuries. It happens because of several reasons. Knee injuries may instigate from the force sited on the knee to alleviate the spinning of the hip axis at the preliminary of the swing—some other reasons for this Pain torn meniscus, osteoarthritis, and chondromalacia. The knee pain symptoms are clicking or swelling of the knee, making it worse by twisting or squatting.

Prevention

Possible treatments of knee injuries can be arthroscopic surgery, rest, medication, therapy, injection treatment bracing, and total joint replacement, etc. You must need to see a doctor if you have Pain on the knee because the therapy generally depends on the severity of the swelling.

6. Neck Injuries

New golf players are prone to have neck injuries. It's because new golfers are not familiar with twisting the body for so long. For the reason of hour-long hitting the balls and swinging the club, the neck muscles get shorten in spasm, and hence you may have the feeling of Pain of having a stiff neck.

Prevention 

To make your upper back and neck flexible, you need to do exercise. And to avoid neck injuries, you may take a break from playing golf for a few days. Then you can work up slowly to the long period for practising golf.

7. Plantar Fasciitis

You may suffer from plantar fasciitis if you choose the wrong footwear while playing golf. That is the swelling of the plantar fascia, and that positioned under the foot sole. It attaches to the heel bone. If you suffer plantar fasciitis, you may feel Pain in the heel early in the morning.

Prevention

For this problem, some drugs can be helpful, like - non-steroidal drugs, anti-swelling drugs. Ice also packs useful for this problem and reduces the Pain when you suffer. For more severe cases, full rest, along with splints, can be suggested.

8. Hand and Finger Injuries

Hand and finger injuries are common injuries for the golf players & it happens because of the repetitive golf motions and the swing at high speeds. These two factors increase the chance of having potentials injuries in the hand and fingers. Repetitive blunt trauma of fingers is also the cause of worst conditions, like - tendinitis, hypoesthesia hammer syndrome, deformed or broken bones, etc.

Prevention 

You can take precautionary measures to get rid of this injury, like – know the proper grip, not trying a long period of ball bashing, not hitting balls on the artificial mat.

9. Tendinitis

Generally, the golfers experience De Quervain's tendinitis. The typical symptoms of tendinitis are - Pain, swelling, and tenderness at the wrists close to the thumb's base. Usually, people have Pain at the left wrist when doing a backswing. It happens because of the swelling in the tendons that control the thumb. In addition to this, it also happens due to excessive tilting of the wrist and premature release of hands. The symptoms are similar to thumb arthritis.

Prevention

The possible treatments can be medication, thumb Spica, rest, therapy, cortisone, surgery, etc., to check the severity of the doctors' problems, they sometimes suggest an X-ray to check. And you should avoid freeing the hand rashly at the backswing.

10. Hip Injuries

While playing golf, compared to any other body parts, the hip is the most vulnerable to getting injured. Although, the hip is a mobile organ and it can bear a lot of weight and stress. For practising golf swing, golf players need to do turning and twisting movement. And during a swing, they also need to adduct repeatedly. And that imposes an enormous amount of force on the hip. Groin strains and low back injuries happen due to rational and shear forces. Meanwhile, the hip joint is similar to the rotator cuff, so hip injuries are also identical to the rotator cuff's tear.

Prevention

To prevent the injuries, you need to make the hip muscle flexible and add strength to it. So before playing golf, try to do some exercise always to warm up the muscles.
