What things will you need to clean a golf ball?

For cleaning a golf ball at home, you need these things-

  • A bucket.
  • Dishwashing liquid used for cleaning light dirt.
  • White Vinegar used for cleaning moderate or medium dirt. White Vinegar is cheap and environmentally safe for use.
  • Soft-bristled brush for scrubbing.
  • Household Ammonia difficult or dirt cleaner.
  • Bleach is used for cleaning tough or moderate dirt.
  • A dishwasher is optional. Cleaning with a dishwasher is not necessary.
  • If you have many balls, you can use a dishwasher for cleaning the shots within a short time.
  • Towel for drying.

Cleaning light dirt or dry dirt from the golf ball

Cleaning mud and a little dust from the golf balls at home, you can rinse them and then dry them with a towel. If this is not enough to make your ball clean, then you need to clean it manually. Steps are as follows-

  • Fill a bucket with lukewarm water.
  • The water must be as much that all the golf balls can quickly submerge into the water.
  • Add some liquid dish soap and mix it. The amount of detergent depends on how many balls do you want to clean.
  • Soak all the balls into the water for one to two hours.
  • Remove all the balls from water and rinse them by using a faucet.

Then wipe the balls with a soft towel. It is impossible to remove all the water drops from the ball, so you have to put the shots at a dry place and use the ball when it is scorched.

Cleaning moderate dirt

For cleaning modest trash from golf balls, you need some white vinegar or bleach. For cleaning moderate dirt from balls follow these steps-

  • Fill a bucket with 75% lukewarm water.
  • Add some bleach or white Vinegar or ammonia into the water. Do not mix two chemical agents.
  • It may produce poisonous gas and also can hamper your balls.
  • These chemicals used to get back the shine again.
  • Soak the balls into the water for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Then pick off all the balls and rinse with water.
  • Then dry the balls with towel smoothly and set the shots in the sun for 4-5 minutes.
  • Once they dried adequately, then keep them in a safe place.

By using the following steps, you can clean a lot of balls at one time.

Cleaning difficult dirt

Sometimes the golf balls get so dirty that the above two methods are not enough for cleaning them. So, you have to clean them differently. And the process is as follows-

  • Add some water in some baking soda for making a paste.
  • Take a soft-bristled brush and dip it into the paste.
  • Then rub the balls with the brush very carefully, especially in the ball's dimples.
  • One must not rub the ball so hard.
  • It can damage the shine of the ball.
  • Wash them with water.
  • Take a bucket with warm (must not hot) water and add some ammonia or bleach or white Vinegar into the water.
  • Mix water and one chemical agent properly.
  • Soak the golf balls in the water for one hour.
  • After an hour, remove the balls from water and rinse them with water.
  • Dry the balls with a soft towel and put them in the sun for drying correctly and then store them.

Cleaning paint or marker spot

If you buy old golf balls, then you will find some marker spots in it. The above three methods are for cleaning dirt. For removing paint from golf balls, you need to follow a different process. The method is-

  • Take some nail paint remover (acetone-based) and dip cotton into the remover.
  • Scrub over the paint with the cotton smoothly and carefully.
  • Then take some water and add some dish soap liquid into the water.
  • Dip the balls into the water for a few minutes.
  • Then take off the balls and rinse with water.
  • Dry them with a soft towel.

Many balls come to the market with refurbishment quality. It means you can change the outer part of the ball when it becomes too dirty or damaged.

Things to remember

  • Try to avoid acidic particles for cleaning because the cutting element can damage your balls.
  • Don't sock the ball for an entire day. It's better to soak the ball maximum of 3-4 hours.
  • Don't scrub the balls hard.
  • Don't mix two chemical agents for cleaning. Always use any one of them.
  • Use a soft brush for scrubbing.
  • Dry the balls properly before taking them in a bag. Don't leave a single drop of water in the shot.
  • Use hand gloves while cleaning with detergents or chemicals to protect your skin from damaging.
  • Clean the balls a day before the tournaments. According to USGA rules, it is illegal to clean the balls in the golf courses during play.

If you ensure these methods correctly, you will clean the golf balls at home and keep the shine. And by cleaning the shots at home, you can ensure the reuse of balls and save money.
